A couple of articles that I authored recently cover the considerations of hiring a copywriter and some advice about company websites. While we provide consultation at ACME Writing, llc, we also hand out free advice whenever possible because it’s what every company should do.

The first of the articles deals with the difference between outrageous copywriters and the real, hard working plain-vanilla variety. Then there is the matter of a well-developed website. Many companies create a website that is lacking important elements. One such element is a complete and transparent About Us page. The volume of business that must be lost every year because of this important oversight has to be horrenous. Most people don’t like dealing with a faceless, nameless entity online. Period.

The Great Writer Returns

When we were getting our first writing business started, I would bid on projects on some of the service marketplace websites like iFreelance, Elance and Guru. As our client base increased, I bid less frequently on these sites. The other reason was that the ROI on these sites was becoming abysmal. An influx of writers from third-world countries, where a dollar an hour would be a good wage, had brought the effective rates in these venues down considerably.

I have decided that I will bid again on some of the better looking projects that are found in the service marketplaces. These may be projects that I take a personal interest in or are projects that offer a fair return for the time and research.

In order to regain the recognition that I once enjoyed on these sites, we have returned to using the (The Great Writer) moniker. I have personally rebranded the profiles on these sites to reflect the original profiles and offerings. Needless to say, The Great Writer always offered a superior product, both writing and editing.

The Great Writer website is still the original site and it still looks clean and functional. It clearly shows the advantage of offering copywriting, copy editing, SEO services and consultation on a WordPress-based platform.

On The Great Writer website, I recently penned an article about ‘outrageous copywriting.’ This is copywriting that seeks to be loud, in-your-face and trendy. It will always amaze me how many start-up companies will seek out this kind of copy. It never occurs to them that NO Fortune 500 company employs this approach and it leaves the public with the impression that the company is tacky.

Why do people hire writers who practice this style of copywriting? It is mainly because the people at the top of this practice promote themselves shamelessly as the purveyors of super-copy. They cannot point to one large company, one successful company, that makes use of their writing, but they are great at self-promotion. Many people buy the hype hook, line and sinker.

Writing changes but stays the same

One thing is certainly true of the writing profession; everything changes. Don’t get me wrong, the basic tenets of copywriting or content writing remain the same, but many considerations change.

Leave it to Google to change their algorithm. Leave it to social networking to evolve and viral marketing to gain prominence. The amount of writing for print media shrinks as content increases. Writers evolve or they wither and die.

The secret to success in copywriting or content writing is to apply old, proven ideas to the full spectrum of digital media and social networking opportunities. The art of selling still reaches for the same well-worn ideas. Building a company’s brand is still about differentiating it in the marketplace and illustrating how its products or services solve all the world’s problems.

Make that, all the problems of prospective customers.

Great writers write punchy copy that is easy to read. They also create newsletters that offer valuable information, copy that provides a litany of reasons to buy and content that provides SEO benefits. Writing styles are subjective and don’t make or break copy or content. Adherence to the writing principles that have worked for decades does work.

Writers should trust what works and find applications for those principles in a digital world. Buyers need to hire smart writers who live in both worlds and pay them what they are worth. A once-removed salesperson………that’s how I would describe a copywriter. While once the benchmark was how good a copywriter’s copy produced qualified leads, now it is the copywriter’s content crafting abilities and the conversion measurement.

The bottom line is, how well does the copywriter’s words move prospects to action? That is the question that divides the great copywriters from the five dollar an article writers.

A writers dream blogging platform; WordPress

There is one thing in common with all of my websites with one exception; all 13 of them. Although some look like custom designed websites, nearly all of them are based on WordPress. Even my main copywriting website, The Great Writer, is based on the WordPress platform. The reason is because WordPress is a work of genius.

Few open source projects can claim the results and global popularity of WordPress. WordPress has been downloaded millions of time; that’s right MILLIONS. The same can be said of the thousands of themes and the thousands of plug-ins. For a writer, WordPress is the ultimate whiteboard.

Unlike this blog and one Blogger blog, all of my WordPress installs are self-hosted. They run the gamet from my three retail portal sites, The Smiling Bride, Internet Mall and Buy it, Try it to my content development site, Solution Content. The look of each of these sites is completely different and unique. Each is technically a blog, but none of them look like a blog.

My consumer financial eduction site Considering Money looks a little like a blog, but it uses a popular template that I modified and works perfectly for it’s intended purpose. My site designed for professional advisors, Advisors Friend, looks very little like a WordPress blog and has a classic look, but at it’s heart is a WordPress blog.

One of my highest traffic blogs is a photo blog called PhotoEscape. I invented the name ten years ago and it has been stolen a half dozen times or more. The template that PhotoEscape uses is a work of art. I use a ‘magazine’ style blog template for my resort review site; The Ideal Resort.

One of my early blogs was a consumer electronics review site. Another WordPress based site, this one has the most unusual name of all; Shnarkel. This has always been one of my favorites and I still believe the developer of the template is brilliant. This one is based on the Box Tube theme by Dezzain Studio and comes closest to looking like a blog. I used to use Shnarkel to show examples of my ability to write product reviews. Later, I added some affiliate ads, but it has always been primarily a site about consumer electronics.

One thing that all of these sites illustrate is that WordPress is diverse and adaptable to nearly any topic or style. As a copywriter and content developer, WordPress is the ultimate method to display my writing. Best of all, even with all of the incredible coding, templates and plug-ins, WordPress remains free and most themes remain free.

With an enormous amount of WordPress expertise, I have offered clients the chance to create an online presense for very little money. All they need to do is get a hosting account with WordPress capabilities. The hosting service ideally offers an easy WordPress install with Simple Scripts or Fantastico. Then, if they don’t already have a domain name, they just need to make the small investment in a domain name.
